Don't miss the FBRN Facebook Auction!

If you aren't yet signed up for Facebook, it might be a good time to join, if only so you can participate in FBRN's Holiday auction!

There are fabulous items, some handmade, some not, donated by volunteers, friends, and supporters of FBRN.

The auction just started today.

http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.510359925649339.119207.502535436431788&type=1

If you're unfamiliar with how an auction via facebook works, no worries, the first photo in the album has a list of instructions and rules. The auction ends promptly at 10:00pm EST on Saturday, December 1st. All the money raised from the auction (minus the cost for shipping items) goes to the foster Frenchies in need. And with vet bills totaling $25,000 or more a month, those foster frenchies definitely need some extra cash in their piggie bank!

There are so many unique and wonderful items to bid on in this auction. Handmade wreaths, blankets, crate pads, pom-pom hats, Frenchie shaped cutting boards, jewelry, etc.

There are even brand new gifts like Frenchie ornaments, t-shirts, crystal embellished jackets, women's purses, Estee Lauder/Clinique/Benefit make-up, collars, and more!

Happy bidding!

Sandy's Aftermath

FBRN favorite Magnolia's foster family's home was swamped by high tides during Sandy.

"Magnolia and the crew rode out Hurricane Sandy on the south shore of Long Island. The bay came over the docks and flooded the entire area. My basement, car and garage all flooded.

The water was rising so high, we were prepared to go into the attic. So, we now have no electricity and no heat. Magnolia and Bruno and the cats are keeping each other warm. At night, we all curl up in bed and keep each other warm."

Magnolia's mom had supplies nestled up under the crawlspace in the attic, just in case everyone was going to have to get that high in the house to escape the rising water.

One of our volunteers, a survivor of Katrina, offered advice to homeowners along the eastern seaboard, since these storms and rising sealevels are likely to result in more flooding over the years.  "NO,LA Tip - keep an ax in your attic. If you get up there and the waters continue to rise, you will need a way to get out."

After Day 8 without heat, Magnolia's foster mom transferred Magnolia to another foster home more inland.

Here's a report about Magnolia from her temporary foster mom.  Magnolia has a very endearing habit of picking up on people's emotions, and she expresses herself vocally with what sound like very human moans and sobs.  "Magnolia is doing well! She misses her foster mama, but says thank you for remembering to pack her green ball! She loves her playtime! She's been sleeping in our bed with us at night, and has been a very good house guest having zero accidents! My sister is here with my nephew and every time he cries,Magnolia cries her human cry (scary!) from the other room!  She's a pleasure to have around!"

Mags is feeling better now that she is warm and cozy.

A number of our volunteers have harrowing stories to tell.  One Manhattanite had to climb out her apartment window and use the fire escape to get clear of rising water, shoving her bundled-up Frenchie out before her into the night.  Many volunteers are still waiting for power to be restored to their lower levels, since salt water has rendered electrical wiring unsound or unsafe to use.  We are thankful that none of our volunteers or their dogs or other animals were lost to the storm, and our hearts go out to those whose animals are missing or who lost family and friends.

Keep a warm thought for those still worrying and coping with the aftermath of Sandy.  We send Happy Thanksgiving wishes to all of our friends, sponsors, volunteers, and supporters, with a wish that next year at this time we are all warm, dry, well-fed, and in our own home sweet homes.

Update:  Today we learned Mags has a lump on her neck.  She'll be seeing the vet this week.  Please keep a good thought for our dear Magnolia blossom!

WANTED: Best quality Mojo!

Yesterday, FBRN took in a tiny girl from a small shelter which was unable to afford her special needs.  The dog came from a puppy mill, and like most puppy mill dogs, she is in bad shape.  She's in worse shape than most mill dogs.

First of all, she weighs just 10 pounds.  That makes her about 10 pounds underweight.  On a veterinary scale of 1-10, she scores a 2.  That's very poor.

She also has a bad, bad case of pneumonia.  Fever of 104.

Plus she's been vomiting since she arrived at the shelter a week or so ago.  The vet says she has a slight "droop" to her esophagus, which may be contributing to her vomiting.

And--and this won't surprise anyone who knows anything about the superior health care puppymillers generously provide their breeding stock--she has heartworm.  Of course.

Immediately after being picked up from the shelter (and thank you so much to the shelter for getting in touch with us!) she was off to the vet and she is being given IV antibiotics and fluids.

She doesn't have a name yet, but that will change by the end of the day.  Please send some best quality mojo and juju and keep her in your thoughts.  If you'd like to sponsor her, you can go this page to PayPal some funds to our no-name girl in South Carolina.  Use the top box on the upper right hand side, and you can leave a message for this darling where the form says "Message to seller."

Thank you!  We've seen very, very sick dogs come around very quickly with support and prayers from our friends and volunteers.  We hope to see that happen today for this adorable girl.

The Frog Princess

UPDATE!  This girl's name is Little Biscuit, thanks to someone on our Facebook page! She was keeping food down yesterday, but today she's back to vomiting.  However, she is up and walking around, and her fever has broken!  Her temp is NORMAL and she is all juicy and full of fluids from the IV, but she'll get some more at the vet today before she goes back to her foster mom's.  She's scheduled for a consultation with a specialist, but so far it looks like she may have a defect in her esophagus rather than megaesophagus.  We'll have to wait and see what that means for her.  We won't be able to start her on heartworm treatment until she is healthier.  Please keep on keeping on sending her loving, healing thoughts and wishes, and we'll be working on plumping her up with fattening and healthy treats!  Thank you to everyone who is sending her donations and good vibes.  You have got the power!

FP

12/10 Update:   Little Biscuit passed away despite our best efforts.  She could not overcome the damage to her digestive system.   To all those who sent vibes and good thoughts and who sponsored her vet care, we did all we could, and we thank you for your help.  Sleep tight, Little B.

Let Us All Praise Patient Frogs

Unlike Pistachio, who is NOT nice to kitties and likes to chase them into corners and bark at them and make their whiskery lives miserable, Cleaona is great with cats.

"Please don't let that cat take me for a walk."

In fact, as you can plainly see, she lets them walk all over her.  And in front of her.  And whip their nasty tails all under her chin and across her eyes. Cleaona is a good, kind Frenchie.

Here's a photo of Cleaona in the car returning from a gathering at a local pet store.  She got to meet lots of other bullies and plenty of people at "The Bulldog Bash!"  She was very alert on the drive home, as you can see, and helped to keep the car on the road by sheer force of will:

Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, Cleaona is hurtling through space and time to rescue lonely people from their benighted, frogless lives.

She had a wonderful time with all the people at the Bulldog Bash, but Cleaona is also great with kids.  Look how this noble beast is not jumping up and taking back her bone from this thieving child.

"Pardon me, but I believe that is my bone."

In short, Cleaona is the essence of gracious forebearance.

We wish we could say the same for

Pistachio!

Nutritious AND delicious, and just a little bit salty, that's our new frogman, Pistachio.  His foster mom sent us some photos and a little information about him.

1. He rarely sits still and he is FAST! I have lots of blurry pics!

Does this dog need a smaller tennis ball?

 2. I have had to keep him separated from my dogs inside the home. Walks are okay.

He's looking pretty vigilant, here.  No October surprises for Mr. P!

3. I have had to spend my extra time exercising this guy to tire him out! Lots of walking!

4. I have to keep him away from my two cats which is a full time job. Those darn cats!

Pistachio plays "Hide and Seek" with the kitties.  He cheats.

His foster mom tells us he is a very friendly boy, and he bestows his kisses freely and without regard to race, creed, gender, class, or national origin!

He is also a wonderful office dog, and he's been spending days in his foster mom's office, providing soothing background snores and grunts.  Too bad more workplaces don't allow dogs to attend.  Productivity would skyrocket!  Morale problems would be a thing of the past!

Pistachio is clearly a handful of Frenchie, and he'll be looking for a family with lots of energy and no other dogs and no kitties.  Pistachio is plenty of dog for any family!

We'll leave you with this vision.

Zenobia Drains the Dregs of Summer

For those of us in the northern regions of the US, summer has officially faded into the colorful crisp days of autumn.  For dogs like Zenobia, who is fortunate enough to be fostering in the sunny south, October brings no cozy fleece coats or apple-scented walks.  Zenobia gets to lounge in the sunshine and model cruisewear.
Come February, we are going to kind of hate Zenobia, predicts

Melody Makes a Friend

Melody has alienated the affections of FBRN grad's Remy's favorite garden statue.

Melody and The Squirrel are spending lots of time together, playing hide and seek

And begging for treats in tandem.

Here's a question for you:  If you are thinking of applying for Melody, will you provide statuary wildlife or will she have to abscond with Remy's?

Remy would also like to know.

LaVelle is Pining for Her Person

Poor LaVelle.  She's been dog of the week for almost a month, and yet there has been not a single application for her.  Her foster mom bemoans the fact that this lovely, gentle, kind dog is not appealing to more adopters.

"Poor Ms. LaVelle, dog of the week and not one application. She doesn't know. I know what they are missing! LaVelle may not be the prettiest girl at the ball, still, she is the sweetest. She is so attentive, just stares into your eyes and absorbs every word you say. She is a listener. Her new thing is to bring me a bone at 7:30 am and run to her bowl and drop it in: "Time for Breakfast!" She does the same thing for dinner @ 4:30. Our other dogs eat @ 10 and 7.

"I want her to have her own home, where she can laze on the couch constantly and use her fabulous bark to fend off potential enemies. We just love her, and I pray for that perfect home. She would be a perfect companion to a stay at home person. LaVelle is not irritating at all, in fact, she is a perfect lady. She adores our furboys, especially FBRN Grad Moose (she Mom's him and he let's her, she knows he's blind) and all people. She is a real joy to foster."

We hope that LaVelle's person is out there looking for her, unaware that LaVelle is waiting patiently.  Do you know someone in the market for a great frogdog?  Check out LaVelle's bio.  She might be The One, and you might get all the credit for acting as matchmaker.  That's excellent karma, declares

Tragic Story of Zion

This week, we heard one of the most heartbreaking stories we can remember hearing.

A volunteer received a call from a woman whose husband, a conservation agent, stopped a man who was carrying a gun as the man emerged from a wooded area.  He learned that the man had been trying to shoot his injured dog because he claimed he could not afford vet care, but though he was shooting at point blank range, the dog escaped from the grave he'd put him in and had run off.  The agent and the man searched for and found the injured Frenchie.

The agent persuaded the man to turn the dog over to rescue, and his wife made a call to us.

The nearest available volunteer was 3 hours away and when she got the call she was just wrapping up her daughter's 10th birthday party.  Mom and daughter got in the car and drove to pick up the injured dog.  When they returned to the volunteer's vet, it became apparent that the dog, named Zion, had been struck by a car about 2 weeks prior, and had been suffering with a shattered pelvis all that time.

In addition, at some point he'd been shot with a shotgun--not in the woods earlier that day, because these pellets were healed over.

The vet recommended euthanasia for Zion, and while her daughter waited outside the room, our volunteer held this gentle dog as he crossed the Bridge.

We understand the conservation agent is preparing a case against the man who tried at least twice to kill his dog and allowed Zion to suffer needlessly for two weeks.  The vet who saw him that day offered to participate in any way he can in prosecuting the owner.

The world is full of ignorance and there are many sad stories in it, and those of us who do rescue hear a lot of them.  This one was particularly difficult.  Please take a moment to consider how fortunate your dog is, and please consider donating to a rescue organization in your town or to FBRN in Zion's memory.

We offer many thanks to our volunteer and especially to her daughter, who learned a very hard, sad lesson on what should have been a very happy day.  Rest in peace, Zion.  You were a very good dog.
