Don't miss the FBRN Facebook Auction!

If you aren't yet signed up for Facebook, it might be a good time to join, if only so you can participate in FBRN's Holiday auction!

There are fabulous items, some handmade, some not, donated by volunteers, friends, and supporters of FBRN.

The auction just started today.

If you're unfamiliar with how an auction via facebook works, no worries, the first photo in the album has a list of instructions and rules. The auction ends promptly at 10:00pm EST on Saturday, December 1st. All the money raised from the auction (minus the cost for shipping items) goes to the foster Frenchies in need. And with vet bills totaling $25,000 or more a month, those foster frenchies definitely need some extra cash in their piggie bank!

There are so many unique and wonderful items to bid on in this auction. Handmade wreaths, blankets, crate pads, pom-pom hats, Frenchie shaped cutting boards, jewelry, etc.

There are even brand new gifts like Frenchie ornaments, t-shirts, crystal embellished jackets, women's purses, Estee Lauder/Clinique/Benefit make-up, collars, and more!

Happy bidding!

Sandy's Aftermath

FBRN favorite Magnolia's foster family's home was swamped by high tides during Sandy.

"Magnolia and the crew rode out Hurricane Sandy on the south shore of Long Island. The bay came over the docks and flooded the entire area. My basement, car and garage all flooded.

The water was rising so high, we were prepared to go into the attic. So, we now have no electricity and no heat. Magnolia and Bruno and the cats are keeping each other warm. At night, we all curl up in bed and keep each other warm."

Magnolia's mom had supplies nestled up under the crawlspace in the attic, just in case everyone was going to have to get that high in the house to escape the rising water.

One of our volunteers, a survivor of Katrina, offered advice to homeowners along the eastern seaboard, since these storms and rising sealevels are likely to result in more flooding over the years.  "NO,LA Tip - keep an ax in your attic. If you get up there and the waters continue to rise, you will need a way to get out."

After Day 8 without heat, Magnolia's foster mom transferred Magnolia to another foster home more inland.

Here's a report about Magnolia from her temporary foster mom.  Magnolia has a very endearing habit of picking up on people's emotions, and she expresses herself vocally with what sound like very human moans and sobs.  "Magnolia is doing well! She misses her foster mama, but says thank you for remembering to pack her green ball! She loves her playtime! She's been sleeping in our bed with us at night, and has been a very good house guest having zero accidents! My sister is here with my nephew and every time he cries,Magnolia cries her human cry (scary!) from the other room!  She's a pleasure to have around!"

Mags is feeling better now that she is warm and cozy.

A number of our volunteers have harrowing stories to tell.  One Manhattanite had to climb out her apartment window and use the fire escape to get clear of rising water, shoving her bundled-up Frenchie out before her into the night.  Many volunteers are still waiting for power to be restored to their lower levels, since salt water has rendered electrical wiring unsound or unsafe to use.  We are thankful that none of our volunteers or their dogs or other animals were lost to the storm, and our hearts go out to those whose animals are missing or who lost family and friends.

Keep a warm thought for those still worrying and coping with the aftermath of Sandy.  We send Happy Thanksgiving wishes to all of our friends, sponsors, volunteers, and supporters, with a wish that next year at this time we are all warm, dry, well-fed, and in our own home sweet homes.

Update:  Today we learned Mags has a lump on her neck.  She'll be seeing the vet this week.  Please keep a good thought for our dear Magnolia blossom!

WANTED: Best quality Mojo!

Yesterday, FBRN took in a tiny girl from a small shelter which was unable to afford her special needs.  The dog came from a puppy mill, and like most puppy mill dogs, she is in bad shape.  She's in worse shape than most mill dogs.

First of all, she weighs just 10 pounds.  That makes her about 10 pounds underweight.  On a veterinary scale of 1-10, she scores a 2.  That's very poor.

She also has a bad, bad case of pneumonia.  Fever of 104.

Plus she's been vomiting since she arrived at the shelter a week or so ago.  The vet says she has a slight "droop" to her esophagus, which may be contributing to her vomiting.

And--and this won't surprise anyone who knows anything about the superior health care puppymillers generously provide their breeding stock--she has heartworm.  Of course.

Immediately after being picked up from the shelter (and thank you so much to the shelter for getting in touch with us!) she was off to the vet and she is being given IV antibiotics and fluids.

She doesn't have a name yet, but that will change by the end of the day.  Please send some best quality mojo and juju and keep her in your thoughts.  If you'd like to sponsor her, you can go this page to PayPal some funds to our no-name girl in South Carolina.  Use the top box on the upper right hand side, and you can leave a message for this darling where the form says "Message to seller."

Thank you!  We've seen very, very sick dogs come around very quickly with support and prayers from our friends and volunteers.  We hope to see that happen today for this adorable girl.

UPDATE!  This girl's name is Little Biscuit, thanks to someone on our Facebook page! She was keeping food down yesterday, but today she's back to vomiting.  However, she is up and walking around, and her fever has broken!  Her temp is NORMAL and she is all juicy and full of fluids from the IV, but she'll get some more at the vet today before she goes back to her foster mom's.  She's scheduled for a consultation with a specialist, but so far it looks like she may have a defect in her esophagus rather than megaesophagus.  We'll have to wait and see what that means for her.  We won't be able to start her on heartworm treatment until she is healthier.  Please keep on keeping on sending her loving, healing thoughts and wishes, and we'll be working on plumping her up with fattening and healthy treats!  Thank you to everyone who is sending her donations and good vibes.  You have got the power!

12/10 Update:   Little Biscuit passed away despite our best efforts.  She could not overcome the damage to her digestive system.   To all those who sent vibes and good thoughts and who sponsored her vet care, we did all we could, and we thank you for your help.  Sleep tight, Little B.
